2-minute game to improve your dog's focus
Whether our dogs are walking nicely on a leash, staying still even with distractions, or settling on a mat at the park…
The foundation skill for any behavior we will teach is:
Paying attention.
As long as you have your dog’s attention, you will always be able to communicate what they should do. On the other hand, without your dog’s attention, you will not get anywhere with training.
Teaching attention can often become a struggle because we ask the dog to say “no” to all the fun around them.
We might tell them to:
- Not look at other dogs or people
- Not sniff interesting bushes
- Not pull to go and check out the trash can
- Not stare at birds and squirrels
This can turn into an “argument” with our dogs!
The good news is that there is a positive way to teach attention.
Instead of focusing on making our dog say NO to all the things above, we will make them say YES to us.
